Character. The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
Godly character. To base your actions on what God has laid down in His Word. To be righteous.
In our home, character building is one of our top priorities. Yes, we want our kids to be fluent in the skill of letter writing, we want them to know how to equate mathematical problems, and know where various countries are, etc. We know however, that if they have a database of all of these skills and we have not helped mold strong character in them through a regenerate heart, we have missed the mark.
Character. It is who you are. It gets set in to your being and you are known by it. It is who you are in public, it is who you are in private. It is who you are in Christ. It is who you are when life gets hard, when circumstances press against you, when conflict arises.
It is learned. It is learned from a young age. It is handed down from generations. Character is important.
So we focus on it, on growing in it, more than any other academic, and we look for tools to help us implement it in our home.
That’s why we use The ABC’s For Godly Children Series.
We don’t ever believe it is too early to teach godly character and other biblical theologies and doctrines, but it’s not easy. Concepts like salvation, justification, and discipleship are important for our kiddos to learn, for us as grown ups to learn, but we need help. This curriculum makes it simple and fun to learn godly character traits, how to live in biblical womanhood and manhood and dig into what doctrines and theologies we live by as Christians.
The ABC’s For Godly Children Series uses super cute ABC flashcards to learn scripture and more along with each letter of the alphabet. Along with that simple tool, there is a handbook to follow allowing you to dig much deeper.
The handbook has a guide for each letter. For instance, A is for Attitude. Staying in line with that concept, there is a bible verse, multiple bonus bible verses, a key bible character to learn from, a lesson to share with the kids, an activity and to really set it in, a super fun craft. For every letter!
There are also games to play and bible verses to be copied for memorization and handwriting help. I actually laminated the handwriting pages so they can be done over and over… and the kids love wiping them off.
Honestly, when I first got this set I thought it would be a cutesy ABC pre-k sort of thing. I thought I might bring it out every once in a while for my 3 year old but not do a whole lot with it. That is not at all what happened.
We are using this curriculum every single day… for all the kids.
Levi, my 3 year old, is learning his letters by it and really enjoying the crafts.
Shiloh, my 2nd grader, is learning to have godly character even at her young age, she’s practicing her handwriting which can always use the help, she LOVES the crafts, and is taking to heart the truths from the bible.
Jeremiah, my 5th grader, is grasping what it means to have strong character, memorizing scripture, reading the bible passages out loud to the rest of us, and growing. Really growing in his character and knowledge as he is becoming a young man.
What I thought would be a cute little curriculum to supplement my pre-k student has turned into a bible, handwriting and art curriculum that is fully involving everyone. It is fantastic.
This entire curriculum was created by Lindsey from Road to 31. From her own words she can tell you why she put it together:
“My desire is to see young boys be taught to become strong godly men, and young girls raised to become gentle godly women. My prayer is that this curriculum will be a stepping stone to further conversation between parents and their children about the person of God and His Word. Godly character, Biblical Manhood, Biblical Womanhood, Doctrine and Theology are topics that should not just be reserved for adult Sunday school. “Teach them diligently to your children … talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” And by the grace of God you will, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)”
